The Better Angels of Our Nature

July 5, 2019

From time to time, it falls on all of us to lift someone else. It doesn’t matter who that person is, or why they stand in need, when others are hurting, it hurts us, too.

My husband and I made a deal very early on in our marriage, when we were still sleeping on the floor, surviving on lentils and arguing over the heels of the bread, that if we ever saw anyone hungry, we would feed them and figure out the finances of it later. This was something my dad had taught me and I felt compelled to continue it. After seeing news reports of people arriving to our country with little besides the shirt on their back, I started searching for an organization that would take donations and deliver them to those in need.

After a bit of searching, I found the Socorro Foundation. I sent them an email and received a text message right back. When I asked if I could send them items from Amazon, their Executive Director Anamichelle sent me photos of their facility & a list of the items they needed most. I cried, friends.

When someone sends me a list of needs that ONLY includes baby formula, baby bottles, underwear, gentle soap for children & socks, my heart just hurts. Especially since I know that if others were aware of where to send these things, their cup would runneth over.

They need:

1: Baby Formula – she specifically requested the Nestle Nido brand.

2: Baby bottles

3: Underwear in all sizes from small children to large adults

4: Socks – all sizes

5: Baby Gentle Body & Hair Soap

My own experience donating is that they are professional, grateful & doing good works. Anamichelle sent me this after my donation arrived.

Many of these items can be purchased for about the same cost as a quilt pattern. So, if you would like to help but also love to quilt, you can order any of these items and email me your receipt through the contact info above (or dm it to me on IG @a.crafty.fox) & I will send you a copy of the Treasure Map pattern from my shop. So it becomes win-win-win. Families at the border will receive necessities, you will receive a quilt pattern AND the knowledge you fed and clothed those in need & I will sleep better knowing that I at least tried to do my part.

I’ve created an Amazon wish list that will ship these items directly to the Foundation in Hidalgo Texas. You can access that here. If you’d prefer I send you the address, just shoot me an email.

This is the quilt pattern you will receive. It was one of my first patterns and is still a favorite! Thanks for my mom for making this gorgeous version!

The situation on our border, I have been sad, cried, been angered and felt helpless. Thank you for the opportunity to actually do something. My donation has been purchased and sent! Today I smile just a little imagining the happiness so many “Amazon” boxes arriving after people are moved to act after reading your blog. You made it so easy, Thank you——Sandi
