Sunny Days Ahead – A Yellow Bear Paw Quilt

May 19, 2020

While I am feeling better (and enjoying this cheery, yellow quilt!) I want to say thank you for the comments on my last post! It is so nice to know I am not alone in this anxiety. This last month I really needed something sunny. Bright & cheerful were the order of the day! So I started with that yellow pillow, and then I wanted to put a twist on that traditional bear paw. And I knew I wanted it to be yellow & I think it’s pretty clear that I LOVE low volume backgrounds. So this yellow quilt popped into my mind.

I turned a classic bear paw block on point & alternated it with background patchwork & then I worked in a nearly-no-effort border where the on point patchwork perfectly matches the rest of the quilt but lets the yellow blocks have a bit of space from the edge. It turned out perfectly. It’s bright & cheery. My sister asked how I got my perfect points, and I owe it all to this bloc loc ruler which is one of my absolute favorite quilting tools.I quilted this Sunny Side Up quilt with a simple squiggle stipple. Every time I quilt things myself I realize long arm quilters are worth their weight in gold.  I used quite a few prints from my Inside Voices club stash. I can’t believe I have nearly 6 years of low volume fabrics! Can you ever have too many low volume fabrics? Especially when this quilt alone took about 3 months worth of club bundles!yellow low volume patchwork quilt pattern

I bound my quilt in yellow gingham from Trixie by Heather Ross. It’s such a PERFECT yellow gingham. I also really enjoyed reading some of my yellow books this month.
Now, with my pretty yellow quilt all sweet and bound (and I took it for a test drive on a chilly night last week, it does it’s job perfectly!) and a trip on the horizon, it’s time to make something for my journey inspired by this cover from Calia Read’s King of the South. This cover is STUNNING and I loved the story inside. It’s an emotional journey through the post world war 1 deep south & I loved the variety of personalities in the characters! If you’d like to PREORDER the pattern for this quilt, you can find the link here. It will be auto-delivered to your email on June 7th.

Amen on the Bloc-Loc ruler (and yellow). I’ve had the HST one for quite a while. I’m currently working on a quilt with a ton of flying geese so I sprang for one of their FG rulers, and it has made it so much easier to sew the blocks together! They’re all exactly the right size, so I just have to sew an accurate quarter-inch seam and the points all work.
