Uprooted: a little book review

April 7, 2018

Soooo, during 31 Days to Happy I had a little catastrophe that wrecked my phone and sent my computer in for repairs. Without technology to distract me or work that had to be done, I picked up a few books from my to-be-read pile. If you know my reading habits, I devour a lot of love stories, a healthy dose of non fiction, memoirs, and business books, and a blend of mystery, fantasy and adventure books.

Uprooted: A Novel is a mix of everything I love about fiction. It’s got an epic adventure, a strong heroine who builds a tribe of strong friends (male & female!) and who exhibits courage, loyalty, and determination while working to save her people. She has a set of values & sticks to them. I loved it so much that after finishing I flipped it to the beginning and started again. And then I bought the physical book JUST IN CASE something happens to my kindle. It’s that good.

The premise of the story involves a wizard, nicknamed ‘the Dragon’, who takes one girl every ten years from a small village on the edge of an enchanted wood. Our heroine gets chosen and the story kicks off. The woods hold danger and mystery and magic. The Dragon is an amazing, honorable, angsty but kind hero, and the resolution to this book couldn’t be any more perfect. I really can’t recommend this book enough.

The language in this book is beautiful with little to no swearing, but there is one intimate scene. I would probably recommend it for 16 and up readers, but if intimacy bothers you, {SPOILER AHEAD – highlight to read} when you get to the scene where she’s walking down the dragon carpet, just flip to the next chapter. Know that they were intimate and you’ll be able to follow the story just fine. {SPOILER OVER}

The pacing in this book is brilliant. I would classify it as a slow-burn. The story starts from a simple beginning and builds to stunning climax. Nothing is rushed, there is no insta-love, and each plot point is painstakingly perfect. If you love epic fantasy like A Court of Thorns & Roses or Outlander, you’ll most likely love Uprooted as well. You can find it here for kindle or physical book.

I have a few more book recommendations I’ll be sharing and hopefully I can pry myself away from my kindle to recreate modules 3 & 4 for 31 Days to Happy.

Have you read Uprooted? What did you think?
