If you signed up for my little hoop swap, and you had a few pictures in your instagram feed, you should have an email from me with your partner in your inbox! And before all of the sewing gets crazy and my company arrives, I’m spending my free time with a good book.
Sewing is fun, but my first love will always be pretty books. On my November bucket list, one of the items was to read fiction. I read a LOT. My Audible list never finds itself neglected. But lately everything has been business and self help. Fiction is the ultimate splurge. Like something terribly indulgent and amazingly relaxing. So while I am burying myself in my new book (Empire of Storms by Sarah J. Maas!) I’m sharing the books that have given me safe haven no matter what was going on around me in the prettiest editions I’ve ever seen. So here’s my perfect gift list for the bookworms in your life!
The Little House on the Prairie – My very first chapter book. I remember reading this seated on the floor of the library at my elementary school. The story transported me to the American West and my imagination was hooked. This is the exact same copy I read so many years ago.
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (and all of The Chronicles of Narnia) – This series by CS Lewis tells a beautiful story. The first time I read it, I missed all of the Christian references, but now when I read it the layers strike me as inspired. I’ve learned so much from these books. I began collecting hardbound editions exactly like these in college, saving up and buying them one at a time. They are still on my list of favorite things!
Jane Eyre – This book introduced me to romances. The perfect story, the perfect anti-hero, the perfect meet cute… everything about Jane Eyre, no matter how many times I read it, just feels perfect. I have a few copies of this book. Resisting a pretty book, especially an old one, isn’t my strength. this edition came into my collection in Portland at Powell’s a few years ago during quilt market. The outside is as perfect as the inside!
Anne of Green Gables (illustrated by Anna Riflebond) This book has always been my favorite, but when Anna did the artwork on the exterior, I had to buy it. Even though I already have this beautiful, clothbound pink version (that would make a FANTASTIC gift for a little girl!) Pretty books are a weakness of mine, can you tell?
Little Women – A gifted copy of Little Women from my grandmother might be my most treasured possession. I’ve read it dozens of times and the binding has gotten soft and I worry for its future. So when I saw this pretty copy on Anna Riflebond’s instagram, it appeared on my shelf two days later (thanks, Amazon ;))
And my current favorites Throne of Glass and A Court of Thorns and Roses. These two series are fantastic, but not G rated. More like PG13 bordering on R. But again, the story just sucked me in. When I closed the last book, it felt like I shut the door on my best friends.
So, in between baking pies, entertaining my family, and sewing about a million lavender rice bags for the winter, you’ll find me here getting lost between pages of mystery and adventure. And romance. Always romance.
Pride and Prejudice (A Penguin Classics Hardcover)

Some of my most favourite books in this list. Books gave me refuge when I was younger now they give me peace. Old favorites are one of the easiest ways for me to relax. Outlander and Harry Potter are some of my go to series as well. The Sarah J Mass books are going to be my Christmas reading treat. Thanks for sharing with us.

More than once I’ve stayed up reading books by K.M. Shea. The timeless princess series I believe is what I read. They have twists on the classics and are all intertwined but can stand alone. I can’t wait to read them to Evie. One that I’ve read over and over, is The Princess by Lori Wick. (I promise I read more than just princess books!) It’s about a girl that grows to love the prince, she was arranged to marry. I have a soft spot for it because … I’ll pm you.

I love the Mitford series by Jan Karon. And every Christmas time I read Two from Galilee by Marjorie Holmes. It just makes me stop and think what it could have been like for Mary.I also enjoyed The Princess by Lori Wick, just like Krista, above , said. And travel books. I love toread about other lands and cultures.
Your editions of those classic books are so lovely- I might have to check them out- even though I already have Anne of Green Gables- also one of my favorites!!

I LOVE BOOKS! As a child I had trouble learning to read, we learned later it was eye movement issues, as a result of me not reading until the forth grade my mother read to me every single night hoping to help me learn. She scoured the library for new books every weekend. I loved ‘The Box Car Children’. We read the whole original series. I passed those onto my grandson. ‘Cheaper by the dozen’ is one I remember her reading and I read it to my kids on a car ride. Of course ‘Anne of Green Gables’. She read all of Lois Lenski’s series of books and ‘Gone with the Wind’ – with southern accent – and talked about the evils of slavery and discrimination. That was in the late 50’s and it has influenced me my entire life.
I still have some of the books from my childhood, although my own children have ‘borrowed’ a few of their favorites for their own homes and to read to their kids.
I can never resist a pretty book spine. We just downsized our house and I did have to get rid of some of my books, but not the old favorites.
